hear here: an urban intervention

A bench is placed on the side of the Kommunale Galerie facing the six-lane Hohenzollerndamm. Next to it is an automat dispensing packages of earplugs for a small fee.

The automat clarifies the offer of the bench—to sit and be aware of one’s ears—while at the same time satirizing the commodification of quiet in our modern world.

With each capsule of earplugs a small notice is included thematizing the motivation of the project as an experience of conscious hearing.  The offer to purchase the capsule as an art object doubles as an offer to purchase a ‘solution’ to the ‘problem’ of the area.  This mimics the real-life offers of ‘solutions’ which enable self-imposed ignorance, rather than perceptual awareness.

hear here ist eine Hörinstallation bestehend aus einer Bank und einem Kaugummiautomaten, der mit Gehörschutzstöpseln gefüllt ist.

Die Positionierung der Bank vor dem Eingang der ‘Kommunalen Galerie’, direkt am stark befahrenen Hohenzollerndamm soll ein Angebot sein, die Geräuschkulisse dieses Ortes bewusst zu erfahren. In Kombination mit der Möglichkeit des (kostenpflichtigen) Erwerbs eines Gehörschutzes wird die akustische Qualität dieses Ortes in Frage gestellt.

Gleichzeitig wird beim Hörer die Frage aufgeworfen, wie viel es uns wert ist Dinge bewusst zu Hören – oder nicht zu hören.

Neben den Gehörschutzstöpseln befindet sich in jeder Kapsel auch ein mit durchlaufender Nummer und Signatur versehener Zettel, der die Motivation des Projektes erläutert. Hierdurch wird die Kapsel zu einem käuflichen Mini-Kunstobjekt – Eine kleine Erinnerung an den Wert des Hörens…
